How to Correct, How to Avoid

1.  Making Your Instagram Account Private

The ideal situation is for followers to find your Instagram page, like, comment, and eventually become a customer/client. A private page is a turn off for one main reason. Why should I be forced to follow just to see a product you want to sell?

Instagram can be viewed as one big window shopping experience when it comes to businesses, there are many potential followers that may find you through tags or referrals. They may like or comment on your content, there are still more who may never follow but will still utilize your services. A private page halts all activity that can be beneficial. Unless someone is just adamant to know what you offer, most will leave a private page quickly.

Private requests also have to be approved, which depending on when it was sent can take up to a day to receive an approval. When was the last time you waited a day to view something and still remembered or wanted it?

2. Posting images too close together.

Posts should be allowed to “breathe” so to speak. Most comments or likes will occur in the first hour. Keep in mind that you are not the only account being followed. Posting images too close together limits the exposure a certain pic may receive as well as you push your own content down. No one likes to feel spammed either, it a page posts 5-10 images back to back most are likely to feel overwhelmed and often unfollow. Schedule at least an hour to two in between posts.

3. Ignoring comments.

No one likes to feel ignored.  That’s the long and short if it. It doesn’t matter if you have 50 or 50,000 followers, you should carve out time to answer their comments as much as you can. Of course some can’t be avoided, i.e. a customer posts on an image 56 weeks old and you never see it. For the majority make it a point at least once a week, to review your last week of images for new comments that may have been missed. Even if its a few days, a potential client will appreciate the effort over never getting a response.

4. Inconsistent or Repetitive.

A double-edged sword here, you can under post as well as overpost. Presenting a clear, stable view of your business is ideal. It builds trust and consistency. People buy from brands that they feel comfortable and secure with. There should not be days, much less weeks without new content being posted. Present a varied view, pushing your services is ok, but focus on the overall customer experience. A page that is Buy, Buy, Buy won’t achieve the desired effect and seems quite disingenuous.

5.Hashtags.

Hashtags and business go hand in hand. Instagram is made for hashtags. It opens your posts to the widest audience. People search hashtags more than they search people. Relevant tags will draw the right people to your page.

6 Facts You Should Know About Hashtags

There are many different opinions on how to use hashtags for effective growth and I wanted to throw my hat in the ring.

I've been growing on Instagram for the last 3 years with my primary business @itstartswithjuice. It has reached over 205K followers and hashtags have played a major role in consistent growth. When I began The Six Figure Chick just over a year ago, having my tags together were part of my launch strategy. The page has reached over 117,000 followers. I used the same hashtag strategy for @richchicksociety and it has reached over 17,000 followers in the last 6 months.

So why do hashtags play such an important part in growth?

Here are two reasons hashtags are great:

1) Free advertising.
Hashtags are a great way to get your content in front of people seeking exactly what you offer. Many people follow hashtags all day long to find new inspiration, products, to check reviews and so many other things. With the right hashtags you are placed in front of those people whether it's hair styles, branding products, new shoes, or restaurant reviews you can be seen for free.

2) Consistency and User Generated Content
Posting on Instagram on a daily basis can be a daunting task, even more so if you post 2-3 times per day. We know being visible on a regular basis is important but what about those days you just can't come up with anything?

Hashtags to the rescue again! Creating your own custom tags that your audience can use to post their own related content will grow your influence and provide credibility to your brand. Customer endorsements build your business faster than most advertising strategies will due to them being genuine and organic. The bonus is you get content that you can also share on your page and your community will grow.

Win-win.

4 Facts You Should Know About Hashtags.

1. You can only use 30 hashtags on a post. The tags you use in the caption and in the comments count towards the 30 max.

2. Hashtags on private pages will not show up, of course your business page should not be on private anyways so in case you needed another reason why, here you go.

3. You should review/update your hashtags every 60-90 days. Instagram grows quickly so you want to stay on top of which tags work for your page and use them consistently.

4. Hashtags that you add in other pages comments don't work, you can only tag your own posts.
