It's that time of the year where we are reflecting on all the things the year has been and I thought this was the perfect time to pull one of my favorites from the vault, so enjoy!
Before I became the six figure chick, or even had dreams of six figure anything I was just like many of you.
I was in a job that didn't care about me, where I had no chance of growing with the company because I could barely stand coming in each day, I was making just enough money to live paycheck to paycheck, and overall just not very happy.
Making ends meet seemed to mean that every two weeks, after giving a place I didn't like more time than I spent with my family there was still barely enough in my bank account to treat someone to the 2 for $20 at Applebee's.
Bills got paid, but I wasn't living, I was simply getting by, even though at the time I didn't know I wasn't happy until my life started changing.
Does that sound familiar?
In my case the situation truly took a turn for the worse when I was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and the checks that were barely making ends meet before went to zero while I was on medical leave.
I'm sharing this because situations such as this will leave you with one of two options.
You will fight like hell to make something happen, or you will give up, and I'm not a quitter.
Who knew that the answer was sitting right in the palm of my hand? I know it sounds corny but over 6 years ago Instagram changed my life, and I couldn't be more thankful.
By using Instagram to share my story and journey I ended up learning how to do something I didn't even have a name for at the time (branding.)
I started by sharing free recipes, the information I was learning about how different fruits and veggies healed your body, and even the things that were going wrong (I created a lot of awful tasting juices before I got it right) but I learned to provide value.
I was genuine in my story (creating connections) and even more important I wasn't worried about what everyone else was doing or even who else was doing what I was doing. I shared MY journey and MY experiences. (your audience will be attracted to what sets you apart from everyone else, even if it's not a perfect image.)
From sharing the recipes, people were asking me for more details, grocery lists, different combos, what if I don't eat this, benefits, etc. and they were asking to pay for the answers. (your audience will ask to buy when they understand your purpose and exactly how you can help them. Your job becomes to create what they ask for.)
This led to my first eBook.
Looking back at what I accomplished with just Open Office and Paint is absolutely amazing :), compared to what I've learned in Canva and other design apps. (start before you're ready and scale when you're ready).
People still purchased it, got great results, and shared their results which led to them referring others to my business! (build your community, word of mouth is invaluable.)
Instagram and Paypal soon became my new best friends and after a few months not only was I seeing consistent profits from selling eBooks but my offerings expanded and I started offering a monthly challenge and journals. (start with one thing, master it and add more as your audience grows.)
Within 6-8 months of starting, I began to see more income from my "side business" than I did from my full time job.
After a year and a half, I was seeing $5000-$9000 each month. I made my first six figures in 2014 and this all happened AFTER putting in time with my 9-5. It was almost funny comparing the end of year then. I made $21,000 from my job in 2014, and $113,000 from my "side business".
The best part was the after work didn't feel like work.
Creating content, building new plans, researching, and testing out new strategies was FUN!
I could easily stay up to 1 or 2 am, catch a nap and then hit it again at 5 am, and THEN go to work from 9-5.
Now, it wasn't all cookies and cream though because even though I was making more money that I ever had in my life, I still had terrible money habits, an income tax mindset and there were plenty of days where I felt like my business was just a dream that would go POOF! at any moment.
(It doesn't matter how much money you make, if you don't handle your internal issues and your mindset you will never learn how to KEEP money and you'll constantly question if you deserve your success.)
I became a full time business owner January 29, 2015 with my juicing business and started offering coaching and guidance to other business owners in July 2015 when I started The Six Figure Chick. This shift was based on most of my juicing clients who were also business owners asking me how to grow their businesses and get more sales.
Since 2017 I've closed my juicing business and focused mainly on teaching other business owners how to use social media, create digital products, share knowledge, and build real communities.
To date I've earned over $2.5 million selling eBooks, Masterclasses, courses and memberships.
I still provide my favorite content and teach what I love my business has grown to working full time with other business owners who want to make their way on social media.
And that's how I started making money online :).
